Bat Rat Spider Crab

#1 Post by Squidy53 »

Last year was a horror for my health but I'm finally back in the game. I'm about to turn 72 and with a sizeable stash of unbuilt kits I've knuckled down to get them done before I croak (kinda kidding). I'm really enjoying myself and will share the results of my labor here as I finish them.

Here's the Bat Rat Spider Crab from 'Angry Red Planet'. The movie was never a winner, but this beasty has a bit of a cult following. The original marionette used in the movie was built by Howard Weeks. The kit's design deviates significantly from the original, creating a beast, that while still completely outlandish, looks a bit more realistic.

Right is how the Bat Rat appeared in the film with a solarization process called 'Cinemagic' used for all scenes set on the Martian surface.

The kit is from Alchemy Works, the sculpt by Chris Lynch and the casting by the legend, Randy Guthrie (Lilmonsters). A sensational job all round.

I found it a challenging build. Once painted, it took me some time to figure out how to get the creature to stand, have all the legs touching the base to support it and not have the front claws/pincers cause the model to tip forward. I eventually sorted it by putting the body on its back supported by a cardboard ring and then glued the legs in place so the 'knee joints' touched the desk. I just kept raising the ring supporting the body until legs were at the right angle. Because all legs are configured/angled similarly this put the claw tips at much the same level. Because of the fragility of the build I applied glue 3 times over as many days to ensure a secure bond. I then made the decision to Dremel out groves in the base into which the claw tips were glued very securely and the grooves then filled and painted. In the film the toe claws didn't penetrate the surface at all, but this was not a design decision but a function of the fact that its representation was a light-as-air marionette. Besides, liking the kit not the movie, I felt no requirement to faithfulness.

You did a great job on it! I had one of these kits, looked at it for a few days, and then gave up. No way was I going to deal with it and be able to come up with something as good as yours.

P.S. - Get building! I'll get the popcorn....

Hey Steve - very glad to see that you are feeling good enough now to build some kits!

Thanks for sharing your engineering technique on the spider kit and it looks great.

Looking forward to seeing more of your builds!

Looks great! Glad you are feeling better.
Great engineering solution, and a well written description of what and why.
Great paint all the way around, especially those figures on the base.

This is awesome stuff! Love this old movie and this great kit! Bomb work! :hot:
Yeah, cheesy old movie but the FX were soooo cool! Loved this creature but the one at the end with the rolling eyeball really creeped me out!

Thanks so much for your kind comments about my build and best wishes on my health. Aging's for the brave that's for sure.

ARP was never a flick I got on well with but like 'Atomic Submarine' and its cyclops alien, the Bat Rat transcends the film in which it appears.

Thanks again and take care of yourselves.

I have the Lunar models version of the "Bat, RAT, Spider, Crab," I haven't built it yet but it is a great likeness to the movie version, it is a pretty rare kit to find these days.
