My bathroom project.

#1 Post by tay666 »

I didn't want to clog up my WORKBENCH thread with updates on my shower re-do.
For those that haven't seen that thread, I have been away from my modeling workbench for the past month.
For 3 weeks I planned and gathered material to tear out and completely redo the 1970 shower in our main-floor bathroom.
Last weekend it finally started.

I tore everything out and cleaned it all up.

I had hoped to get a lot more done during the week, but old age is catching up with me :)
While I did work at it every day, I didn't get anywhere near what I thought I would done.
Every day I would have like 5 or 6 little things I thought I could knock out and end up only getting a couple done.
I started getting a bit down on myself for not hitting goals. But then I cut myself some slack.
Any progress is good progress, and the job will take as long as it's gonna take.
Yes, I could knuckle down and work harder and longer, but with work and normal life stuff, I gotta have some down time. Also pushing too hard would lead to cutting corners and not doing things to the standard I want them done. I want to do this job once and never have to revisit it. It's a lot like model kit prep work in that regard. You can rush it, then see stuff you missed while painting, or take your time and get all the little stuff right before moving forward.
So things that could probably be done in 15-20 minutes are taking me 40-60 minutes.

I had to sort out exactly where I needed blocking. Because while I am doing this I am adding 3 grab bars. One on either side, and one on the back wall. (I'm not getting any younger) Had to get all that in place before I could start putting up the concrete board.
Then I had sort out the plumbing. I am keeping the hot/cold handles and the tub spout, but I added a transfer valve to add a handheld shower to supplement the regular shower head. Again, planning ahead for a time where a shower chair may be needed, as well as make it easier to give the dogs a bath.
I am also adding a niche under the shower head to hold the soap and shampoo and such. The wife had one of those racks that hangs off the shower head, but I always hate those things. It had to go on that wall as the other 2 walls are exterior walls and need insulation.

As you can see, that wall is just a little bit complicated.
I finished the plumbing last night. Today I tested that plumbing. Thankfully my soldering skills are still up to par. I was dreading that step, which is why I put it off until this morning. Didn't want to end the day last night on a sour note. After the relief of that not leaking I cut the existing framing and put in the frame for the niche. Which I built twice BTW. The first time I built it, earlier this week, it was a little too tight. The niche is a one piece stainless steel piece. At first I shimmed it bigger. But after a night to sleep on it I decided to scrap that and start over, giving it more play. Glad I did, because today I also realized I need to have some play to add the waterproofing.
Now I just need to layout and cut the cement board to go over all of that

Very impressive ! Congrats on no leaks!

No doubt that the time you are spending thinking ahead and taking the time to do the job right will all be worth it and you will be very pleased with the results.

When we had our bathroom remodelled, we ended up with a mysterious leak. The workman came out again, and found that the drywall guy had put a screw into one of the new pipes!

Man, that had to suck.
I don't have to worry about that. I know to use the correct sized fasteners.
If you run your plumbing (or wires) in the middle of the stud, then 1 1/4" drywall screws are not going touch anything. That is all the longer you need.
1/2" drywall so the screw will be 3/4" into the stud.

That's the reason I'm doing it. Been putting it off for a couple years. This year she made it clear this project was going to be the top priority.

And now I am held up again ](*,)
After work today, I got the cement board for that really complicated wall cut and drilled so it would fit.
Before I installed it though I wanted to change the washers in the tub faucets while they were still easily accessable.
I did the hot water one on Saturday, no issues at all. Went to do the cold tap today real quick and it wouldn't go back together. Somehow the threads got messed up. So I need to stop at the local plumbing supply and see if I can get a new one.
So tomorrow if I can't get one, I will have to switch gears. Might paint two of the walls and get that out of the way.

Good news, local plumbing place fixed me up just fine. Didn't have a new one, but had an old one in the back that he put some new parts on and I'm all set for the total cost of $5.30 and about a half hour of my time.
There is a reason I call them when I have a job I can't (or won't) do.

Unfortunately, my son stopped over for a visit today so I didn't get much at all done. But I will always gladly swap family time for working working on a project.

Tomorrow is the day that has me a bit jittery.
Will be my first time cutting tile. Got the tile saw set up today, and threw together a quick outfeed platform.
Got the first two tiles marked for cutting. As long as the weather isn't total crap I will be cutting tile. (weather is a factor because I will be doing this outside. Too loud and messy to even attempt in the basement)

Fears unfounded. Relatively easy to use and seems a whole lot safer than a table saw.

Well, just like everything else with this project, the tiling is going to take way longer than I thought it would.
Today I started with this.
Image

And 2 hours later I had this.
Two hours to set 7 tiles.
Image

Then I spent another hour just cleaning up and cleaning tools. Put off cleaning the bucket until after dinner.

To think, at one point I thought this job would be completely finished before Easter. :rolf:

Its beautiful tile ... but it does take time ... remember watching my stepson helping our son-in-law to lay oversized tile floors in their kitchen last year over a weekend ... slow work, but the payoff looks great! But - like anything, the first time takes much longer than the second, third, etc ... Keep at it! :thumb2:

Yeah, some things went better today. But I managed to find new ways to complicate my life :D
I have a very bad habit of drastically under-estimating how long things will take.
I had the same problem when I rewired my house. I kept thinking I would get so much more done each day when in reality it would take me like 3 hours just to do a couple receptacles. The steps always seem so easy and straightforward in my head but when it comes time to execute everything takes so much longer.

It's a lot like painting models. You sit down and think, I just have to do this, then this, then this. 2 hours later you are just finishing the first step.

I hope so. Much like modeling, I can see every minor flaw like a flashing neon light. But sadly, once the thinset sets, things are not gonna move.
My wife can't see any of it and thinks I'm being too fussy :)
And she is probably right, but that being fussy is what is going to keep it from looking too bad.
