CAPTAIN POMPOUS

#1 Post by Tiger2 »

One of the benefits of hitting 60 last April, my wonderful Mother in Law treated me to this fine fellow!
Not sure if Dad's Army was screened in the USA, but hopefully a few of you will recognise him.

Sculpted to perfection by Christopher Sorby (YbrossculptS), an amazing artist based in Australia.
Chris has been gradually producing all the main characters from this timeless comedy classic as a superb line of busts.
The likenesses and details are just incredible, especially when you consider they are around 1/9th scale!

This is the first version he’s taken to a full figure format which I prefer, so I put an order in ASAP. All hand sculpted
traditionally in clay and very cleanly cast, the only 3D printed elements are his glasses and baton which as you can
imagine, are very fine and delicate. Chris also use 3D software to create the arm patches which are completely legible,
along with the hat badge, but these were then applied to the master sculpt and cast in resin with the main parts.

The kit comes in 10 parts in a robust, bespoke box. For a home spun garage kit it’s first class packaging and presentation.
A couple of minor pour spurs and a little sanding to deal with and I was good to go.

I added the perspex in the lenses on his specs, certainly tested my own eyes I can tell you. A great tribute to an iconic
character and actor, I can just hear him say 'you stupid boy!!' Hope you like him.

All the best,
Paul

Excellent work! Nice job on the glasses, especially at that scale.

Paul,
It's an excellent likeness of Arthur Lowe (doesn't look a thing like Toby Jones though :) )
The skin and uniform are excellent and I'm sure the scale was challenging. If I'm not mistaken there is at least one other character available (Wilson??)
I don't remember seeing the series in Canada or on US cable channels growing up (it's the kind of program PBS would have broadcast) but the series was - or is - available through Amazon Prime Video.

Many thanks Derek,
I just had to remind myself who Toby Jones was, nothing like him!? Look up Christopher Sorby on Facebook, he's done the whole platoon as busts, but this is the first to be expanded to the full figure. The likeness of the others is just as good, especially Jones who was played by Clive Dunn. So funny, well worth a watch!

Peter, FYI - Toby jones played Mainwaring in the Dad's Army film (2016) and Billy Nighy played Wilson. I thought it was fine but it has a terrible rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I guess there's no accounting for my tastes!

What a great build. Lovely paintwork and great shading. I can almost hear him saying "You stupid boy!". It makes me smile just looking at it.

This show was immensely popular here in Australia. Never a fan myself but I can understand its appeal. It's hard not to have absorbed some of the show even if you didn't watch it.
