SEVANS MOVIE DALEK

#1 Post by Tiger2 »

Hi all,

Fancied a bit of a styrene build, so tackling the next Sevans it from my stash pile. I have done build threads on the Ice Warrior and Davros kits, both vac form and mixed media cottage industry products.
These models were produced back in the late 80's / early 90's and have long been acknowledged as the most accurate replicas of the original props to date. At 1/5th scale, they are quite large,
taking a fair bit of effort and care to make them presentable. But I like a challenge and as you can see here, my Ice Warrior and Davros need some company!

Image

The kit will build into any variant of the early TV Daleks, or either of the 2 Movie Daleks. I'm planning on making this a worker from the first movie, I love the colour scheme and simplicity of the early
look without the shoulder slats. Here are a few pics of the initial grind, sanding and scraping has begun in earnest.

The previous owner that I won this from on evil bay a few years ago did the writing all over the neck bins, not sure what his plan was.
Apart from that vandalism, everything else is pure and as clean as it was when produced way back when. The plastic has yellowed a bit,
but doesn't seem to be any more brittle which is good news.

Finally got all the sanding, scraping and mitres done on the skirt panels with only one slashed finger tip (ouch) and now the skirt is glued together.
Talk about pulling teeth, it was a slow process of constant test fitting and various anglo saxon expletives and despite all my efforts to prep the parts as
carefully as possible, these things are simply a nightmare to assemble, that's official!!

As one piece was added, it would pull itself free as I tried to align its neighbour.
Maybe it's just me, but I dont fully get the mitre thing, it takes ages to do and doesn't really work as you'd expect once you start sticking the panels on. I swear the Davros kit I built earlier
was a lot easier. Hey ho, all edges are as tight as I can get, but it will take a round of putty and sanding to get rid of all the gaps.
So, I'll try and get that sorted and the head and shoulders underway for the next update. Cheers for now....

That looks like a pure pain in the ass!
I would have probably cut some sheet styrene to act as interior gussets to help connect everything together and save my sanity.

Looking good though. I can't wait to watch more of this develope.

Ooh another classic on the way - if I remember rightly I added some internal strengtheners to the joints on mine - made from ~10mm strips of thin styrene, scored longways and bent to fit.
I wonder if the original owner took all those measurement to allow them to scale a full size one?

Nice! Look forward to the build - 100% agree with Ant that I would add some internal trusses/strengtheners to the body. :thumb2:

Probably easier than working on a big resin kit full of pinholes like a lot of the early stuff.

Many thanks Ant and yes, I'll be strengthening the seams internally with putty and scrap plastic. Working on the head and neck section at the moment,
I've got to source some thin brass or styrene rod to do the vertical strips on the neck. As I'm sure you know, they were 'cloverleaf' shaped in cross section, 'trefoil' is the word I believe.
The kit just provides a single, thick tube to keep things simple, but I want 'accurate', not simple! Flat out with work again, but I will try and keep this moving.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement and support!
All the best,
Paul

A LITTLE MORE PROGRESS ON THE SEVANS
MOVIE DALEK BUILD...

Hi folks, hope all's well and everyone had a good Easter. Despite the lack of posts, I'm still chipping away at our styrene friend here.
A lot of filling and sanding on the skirt still to go, but the shoulder section and collar assembly is just about there now and the neck bin is also together.
The images below show the 'scratch build' nature of this kit, certainly a product of its time!

I've had a go at replicating the triple section struts on the neck sections with brass rod. Very tedious but the effect looks better than the
single styrene strut in the kit. I have since puttied the holes the rods pass through, so the neck ring blends flush around the strut

The eye, claw and gun assemblies are all together now as well, including some wire detailing on the gun to try and match the classic egg whisk look.
The Movie Dalek gun should really be a simple piece of tube, but the kit part with integral slots was easier to add the wire details!

All ready for a first primer coat, that will no doubt show up more issues that will need sanding and filling, but hopefully moving in the right direction.
Hopefully back soon!

Cheers,
Paul

Cool buildup Paul. All the talk about bracing the inside of the skirt reminds me of my Comet buildup, which I found challenging enough!

I look forward to seeing more. All the best.

Hi Folks,

Apologies for the long delay on progress with this build, but I've finally got the time and weather
required to get all the spraying done and it's crossed the finish line, Yay!!

This has been a long haul, it's a 40 year old vac form styrene and mixed media antique kit after all
and needed quite a bit of TLC to get parts to fit etc.

Lots of test fitting, sanding, putty etc. and then hours of masking to paint it. I nearly lost it with
cutting the masks with my little circle cutter for the hemispheres on the skirt!! It would have been
so much easier if they were all separate. Pics attached of the masking, just so you can see what I've
been dealing with.

I need a nice simple resin kit next to get my sanity back, then again, are they ever simple?!

When all's said and done, I'm pretty chuffed with how it's turned out, a few rough spots here and there
so please don't look too closely.

More pics in the museum, including a 'group hug' with the other 2 Sevans builds in the display case.

Cheers for now,
Paul

Beautiful Job! I remember the nightmare of all that masking - I've now got a vinyl cutter that would have made short work of it!

You're not coming to Smallspace this weekend are you?

Many thanks Ant, I've been trying to get is as sharp as Gary's 2 footer over at Mooncrest! I did want to come to the Smallspace show,
but it's my son's 28th birthday this weekend and Vanessa and I are dog sitting so he and his fiancé can go out and celebrate! Please post pics if you go, especially if the Mooncrest Dalek is on display.
