My Oldest Model (Built 1975) - The Titanic!

#1 Post by bucketfoot-al »

I took this one out of its protective box (it was stored for over a decade and a half in the empty box for my built-up 1/200 Nichimo Yamato) and displayed it again at our Summer House here in Croatia this Summer.

I built this Titanic kit over the Summer of 1975 over here. Took me an hour or two every morning up in the attic over two months to finish it. I had brought it unbuilt from the States as I spent my Summers over here in the 1970s. My grandfather displayed it proudly in the day room. Over the decades small pieces have gone missing and sewing-thread-cables have broken (as my mother used to tell me, every time some kid visited the house he/she would want to touch it).

I think its in 1/350 scale, approx. 30.5" or 76cm wide. (Yes, I know the actual Titanic's funnels were painted yellow, not red, but for some reason the 14-year-old me thought red would look cooler - like those on the Queen Mary :D )

None the less, as I now have several big display shelves upstairs, I've decided to display it again. Not worth getting a glass cover (though the thought keeps crossing my mind, just to arrest further deterioration :? ). In any event, the sight of it brings back memories. Though not the oldest kit I ever built (that would have been some Aurora monster or dinosaur kit from 1972 when I came to the States), it is my oldest model kit still extant. :alcoholic: :rolf: Enjoy.

Very cool, surprised it's in such good condition considering the age and the history. That's what keeps me at the workbench - the memories and connections to loved ones.

I'll break out of my "modest" mode to agree with you here 😂😉

For a 14-year old, it was indeed impressive work! 🤩

So neat! All my old models disappeared when I got married and moved out of my parent’s house. I think my nephews may have destroyed them either playing with them or blowing them up with firecrackers. Regardless, none of the models from my youth still exist.
You should definitely cherish this model, quite the impressive achievement for a 14 year old and it has held up very well.

2025 UPDATE:

Well, I had the local glassmaker/cutter Mario make me a second glass case ("ship bell" as translated from Croatian), this time for my 1975 Titanic model. Looks beautiful, and cost me ... about $125. :mrgreen2: Yes, the old-time craftsmen over here that you have a years-long relationship with charge you "the local price" (as opposed to the "rich American" markup). :thumb2:

I’m glad you didn’t try to repair anything Vlad.
