Currently retired after almost 25 years with the NYC Fire Dept., my first taste of the Garage Kit World was in the mid 90's. I built the regular plastic models for years - my first on in prolly 1968 or so. But I found myself in a comic shop investigating the new Star Wars stuff (word of the Prequels had created an interest resurgence) discovered a mag called Modeller's Resource. I was familiar with Fine scale Modeler magazine, but what were these new models? Of course me being me, I dove in 200% and found the other magazines, and then places online like Gremlins in the Garage. From there it was only a short jump to The Clubhouse! Once I got over the sticker shock, I was hooked. Sadly for this collection album, none of my Aurora Monsters, Dinosaurs and space ships made it thru my adolescent years...
Some of my earliest tries at GK kits:

My first "studio" was just a corner of a wrap around porch on a"new" old house. The porch was enclosed, and heated. But my first winter showed the area had not nearly enough heat. After a few years of that I needed to take one of the spare bedrooms on the second floor. I took over the smallest one. Fine. I was warm and continue my building -AND- my buying. It was at this time I "discovered" minis. So I dove into those too -

I was lucky that the house had a full sized attic, altho it was completely unfinished. There was 2 windows and a skylight, so that was a good start. I also wanted room for regular storage. So thanks to my Dad we brought in the the materials and created my studio It only took a few weeks and I had a nice "L" shaped room. I decided to put the work desk in the little part of the "L" and expanded from there. I had a few a few acrylic shelves for me paint, a few Ikea shelves of books, but decided1/2 of them went into storage to make room for my first kits.

Then 9/11 happened and the guys were either working in the firehouse, or at the site digging, for months. Next came odd ailments and hundreds of Dr. appts. First few MRIs were done, and I was told to get it in my head that my career is over... As you would expect no modeling was done. But addicted to the "If I don't get it when first offered, I'm going to lose out" disease, things got out of control.

Things only got worse from there... #-o :shrug

Jump ahead to 2013, and the Dr's told me there was nothing more to be done with my 60% lung loss and I got my Disability release. It took some time to adjust, but when I found my balance it was time to start digging into my too large a pile of kits. In my studio chair, surrounded by those boxes, I decided that I couldn't just like everything - which I did (and in cases, still do). I needed to be specific. Back when I was a kid I had the monsters and dinosaurs - I still like them. I also liked the space ships - check. From the Harryhausen I really like Medusa, so that would be another permanent subject for me. Another early memory for my was the 1941 Wolfman. He fit into the other category, but there were so many good Wolfmen, and even when the movie didn't pull it off well - the Wolfmen still did so that was another category. Finally always wanting to be a pilot, I always liked aircraft. But there was a special jerk to my heart when I first saw all these experimental planes of the 30s and 40's. Especially when a certain country in Europe went crazy evil - the planes they invented in their desperation at the end was amazing. I'd have to look into those.

So the shelves went up. first is a generally larger sized models and then mixed 1/4 scale busts

Then I collected the categories - Bigfeet, Wolfmen, Vampires, Medusas, The Thing characters

Dragons, various 1/4 scale busts etc...

Planes, Rockets, & Sci-Fi

So there's my collection as of late 2025. Wjat will happen to the boxed kits? So will have to go. some will manage to stay.

Thanks for the spectacular buildups and the great story/background. It's sobering to hear what folks have to deal with when you scratch the surface. All the best Kevin.

I'll single out the table with everything from Leeloo, dinosaur girl, Flash Gordon and The Reptile! Great stuff!

INCREDIBLE story Kev - and THANK YOU for all you did after 9-11!! So glad you were able to get back on your feet after the tragic medical consequences of your sacrifices in those days and back to modeling!

An amazing tour-de-force - when I get time and do my own collection thread, YOURS is the one I am going to try ... MODELING IT after (see what I did there  )

I have one question - the moustachioed bust on the left hand side of the last photo ... looks a bit ... shall we say ... "Avant-Garde" .... IS IT ... of Dali??? :drool2: (If it is of Salvador Dali, would love more info on it as I am a BIG fan of his, artistically ....

Thanks! I tied to have more concentrated collections, but too many various kits caught my eye. 8-[
I'd have to look it up but ... I think... it was from Creepy Tables.

Holy Grail kits seem to be very rare or I just missed out on them time-wise. The Black Beast I actually sculpted myself. I did the Beast the Knights of NI - the main giant guy, plus one minion knight. I have the Beast of Caer Bannog (the bunny) sculpted and bought some bones etc... but just haven't put the vignette together yet. I was going to do the Enchanter Tim, but haven't gotten around to him either.

Thanks. Yes, I really lucked out with the attic. The downside is even if I'm up there only 3-4X a week, the AC needs to be running 24/7 in the summer, or the heat will will dry my acrylics on a wet palette and have me a sopping mess in 2 minutes... ;)
