Iron Spiderman

#1 Post by resin addict »

Here's a piece I've been spending a little time on lately...don't know much about the source as it was shipped to me by a client; I believe it came from a sculptor in the Philippines.
I decided to try and copy as best I could the metallic look of a lot of the art work that you see for this particular version. I'm liking where it's going.
The piece was cast as all one piece except the two arms were separate, but based on the location of the joint(s), I had to completely assemble the figure, prior to beginning any paint application, so now I've got some challenging masking coming up to add the gold metallic portions to the costume, as the gold requires first black, then chrome, then gold, and finally more clear.
Just a few in progress pictures showing the chrome application, then the gold over top of the chrome, the body after chrome and candy red, and finally a test fit of one leg, just to look at the contrast between the red and gold, and finally a quick test fit of the body with three legs on the base.

Sure...I start out with Humbrol Gloss Black enamel, then spray Alclad Chrome over that; going just a little lighter with the chrome in the "depressions" of the anatomy to help define the muscles. I let that cure for a couple days; then sprayed Alclad Candy Red Enamel over the entire piece; doing just the opposite, going a little heavier or darker in the depressions to emphasize the musculature. Then I let that cure several days, then I take it to the body shop and spray several really wet coats of catalyzed automotive clear. Once that's cured it always looks wet but is as hard as glass.

Just remember, there are several very wet coats of automotive catalyzed clear over top of the candy red...that really helps to give it that depth.

Yeah  I should be more careful with my picture taking...there's always an embarrassing amount of in-progress stuff in the background.
That piece is actually a OOAK original sculpture that is for a client...it was kind of a pain, because whoever it was that sculpted it did the figures but for some reason was uncomfortable sculpting on any logos, so I had to add all of those, and I hate (HATE) sculpting.

I love sneaking little glimpses of what's behind the subject. Must be the voyeur in me.

Wow. That catalyzed clear coat is unreal... Same with your use of alclad. I've got a long, LONG way to go... lol

I've just started using enamels as basecoats for metalics, namely some decanted Testors Black, and WOW! It definitely makes a difference. Glad to see I'm on the right path here, lol
