Is Mark using a light tent (box)?
Thanks Ric. No, I don't use any form of light tent. I own a small one and should probably try it out on some small things.
My basic setup is actually very simple, almost to the point of downright humorous. I use my desk lamps. I have two combo lamps that work great for most jobs. I don't worry too much about diffusing the light for most things. If I need to, I have a couple of photo floods and umbrellas for that.
One big advantage is that I have a DSLR that is very versatile. You can set the white balance to match any light source and having those interchangeable lenses means my photos are pretty sharp. About the light. It is important that all the lamps you use have the same type of bulb in them. Otherwise your colors can be uneven across the same shot.
Also, digital photography has made taking loads of shots basically free! Film got expensive, but memory cards can be used over and over. So I'd suggest shooting away and trying slight adjustments with the lights until you ultimately get a few good ones. Even then, adjusting the color and tonal balance, even with a basic editor that comes with your computer, is a good idea.
Hope this helps.
