Except for the magazines I had sitting on the bottom shelfHeavy Metal Spike wrote: Bit of a bugger on that and the leak - but could have been worse - you were smart enough to have castors & risers on stuff so it wasn't affected.
.
The only reason they were even down there is from when I was taking pics of stuff for the Mad Labs section of my site. And I was too lazy to take them back upstairs.
Guess that will teach me
The only real casualty seems to be Son of the Garage Kit that Ate My Wallet.
I am still trying to gently peel pages apart, but it got pretty soaked all the way through.
I'll eventually pick up a replacement.
Couple of the AFMs got a little wet on the edge of the pages, but nothing really worth noting.
I've had to move my workbench, and got most of the stuff cleaned off of it now.
Originally when it happened, I shoved the bench out of the way. Replaced the vent cap that rotted away on the shut-off valve then had to empty the shelves to assess the damage. So everything got piled on the workbench.
I don't want to put stuff back on the shelves until the leak is completely fixed. So I had to find new homes for it all. After I shut the water off to make repairs and turned it back on again, now water is running out of the stem of the valve. And it's still gonna be like 3 weeks until the plumbers can get to it. So I moved some of my lighting around to work in the new bench location.
We are leaving in a little bit to go shopping so I can get some more paint.
So, I should have the first coat of paint on the shelves today.
Will see if it needs a 2nd coat tomorrow.
After that I can start the installation. Not worried about waiting for it to cure, as I am only painting the bottom of the shelves, and the front edge. The top is just staying primed, as it won't be seen, being 7+ feet off the floor. I just wanted it sealed for easier cleaning when needed. The primer was done like 10 days ago, so that is all good.
So, I should be able to start my vacation on Tuesday by putting things on the shelves.
Finally.

I feel for you Trev - setbacks suck - especially when they come in bunches. Keep plugging away ... 2 steps forward, one step back ... you'll get there!

Re: Working on my workshop.
I am very familiar with that black cloud.
On a positive note, the shelves should be installed tonight.
So tomorrow I can start filling them.

Re: Working on my workshop.
It will be a while until I get everything up on the shelves over the windows.
But here is what I put on the shelves on the other side of the room
It took me a few hours to dig everything out to get to the boxes.
Then I had to sort an organize everything as I put it back. Just finished up about half an hour ago.

Agreed - I wondered what you were going to display way up there - that REALLY works.Scooke123 wrote:Good spot to display those PS boxes - looks great!

God that reminds me of the shelves at the nearby paper/coffee/model shop in the early 1970s in Forest Hills, Queens ... I can almost smell that place just seeing your display.

Re: Working on my workshop.
Empty boxes. Not all of them either, just the domestic ones. My Canadian and European ones are still packed in a tote. My sealed kits will be displayed in the closet in that room so they won't be subject to UV issues. These are up high enough sunlight hitting them shouldn't be an issue. Besides most aren't in the best shape anyway.Heavy Metal Spike wrote:Agreed - I wondered what you were going to display way up there - that REALLY works.Scooke123 wrote:Good spot to display those PS boxes - looks great!

That is why I am putting Halloween masks up on the shelves over the windows. No chance of sunlight causing problems for the latex.

Re: Working on my workshop.
Well, the week of the 8th is over and still no plumber.
They are having problems syncing schedules with the city to do the job. They need the city to shut the water off at the street to change the valve.
Hopefully next Thursday, that is the latest target.
I am hoping to make some time this weekend to work on filling the shelves over the windows. I am also hoping to layout the next set of shelves.
The ones I want to layout are very tricky for a number of reasons, so I think I am going to have to put that off for now. Maybe sort out the wall between the door and the window.

Guess there are different designs and/or regulations in the U.S. compared to the UK. Back in the UK (all houses we lived in) there was a stopcock under the pavement or under your front yard that shut everything off, with a seperate shut-off inside the house (like the one you have leaking).
No idea what the situation is here in Canada - it's probably designed badly and regulated through the arse if it's like everything else over here though

Re: Working on my workshop.
There is a shut-off at the street.(technically, somewhere in the tree lawn) I'm just not sure where it is.
I also don't have the special wrench needed to use that shut-off.
And the plumbers won't touch the one at the street if they can help it. Because of the age of the infrastructure the odds of something screwing up is high. If the city breaks it, they fix it.
If the plumber, or a homeowner breaks it, guess who gets to pay for the city to dig up the street and fix things?

Re: Working on my workshop.
One house was pre-WW2 - and the street cut-off was too far down for a human arm to reach. I had to build a wooden extension block to get to it. Of course - that was after I'd had to spend 2 hours removing all the soil from the ants nest that completely filled the chamber to street leveltay666 wrote: . . . The other one I had to use was only 2 foot down (just below frost level) and was at the bottom of a nice clean plastic tube (probably because the house was only 8 years old).

Re: Working on my workshop.
Same thing here in Manitoba, except our frost line is six feet down and we can not touch the curb stop. I guess the only consolation is that it's before the meter so your not paying for the loss of water. Still really sucks though. Winnipeg's waterworks department treat their appointments like the cable guy but they do show up.tay666 wrote:There is a shut-off at the street.(technically, somewhere in the tree lawn) I'm just not sure where it is.
