Yes - I've already done some, and will use darker oil washes to finish the effect.

Just finished another one - thread link below. I have now "caught up" with dinosaurs (all of my old bashes that lay unpainted have been completed). It will be a little bit before I do another dinosaur as I have a couple of King Kong and Harryhausen kits up next.

In the meantime, here is the Kaiyodo Camarasaurus: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=124788

Having finished the Kong/Empire State Bldg 'bash, its time to go back to dinosaurs ... not a 'bash per se, but a straight up build of my Brazilian friend Ademar Pereira Do Nascimento's latest South American dinosaur sculpt ... an enormous, 38" long 1/35 scale Patagotitan ... Ademar is on FB and anyone wanting to buy one of his resin models can contact him there ... with shipping you'll wind up paying half of what it would cost you to get a similar quality resin sculpt here in the USA ...

... 10 years ago I built up his even more gigantic 1/30 Argentinosaurus ... he has engineered an absolutely ingenious "screw-in" system for the tails and necks of these enormous kits ... yes, they line up perfectly. That way he can ship even painted-up finished kits partially disassembled ... I don't think I need to tell you that shipping a box for a 15" disassembled dino-kit is a heckuva lot easier (and cheaper) than shipping an assembled 38" delicate sauropod-sausage cross-continents!!! :rolf:

Take a look - his work is superb! :drool2:

I like the pattern, but I am not a fan of grey color scheme for Dino’s….
But go with the color that you prefer!

I like the pattern too. That's why I picked it ... the colors are still "up in the air" ... that's part 2 .... I just need to settle on a pattern - and I think I like this one best - mostly on the neck, making the body paint up a little easier ... having said that, giant animals (elephants, rhinos) have pretty uniform and dull color patterns ... a "giraffe" color scheme might be a compromise ...

I do like the pattern, but maybe a darker gray.

That's another good one ... giraffe colors seem to me a bit too garish for a 70-tonne animal ... the key for me is to remember to make the initial colors LIGHT because the subsequent darker oil washes will always darken them ...

Wow! That's going to be be a nice new project. I think it's awesome too that you have the room to set these huge guys up.
I guess b/c it wasn't too popular, I sorta fell into the Luis Rey style paint theory. ;)
My take is all the colors are good, yes they are big but so were all the animals (ok so this guys was bigger than most). So IMHO they did need the camouflage. Too vibrant? Just add a little black or white to your bright color and it desaturates it. Then add the non desaturated color for highlights. Just an FYI and FWIW, what do I know... ;)

Slow down, slow down - I'm running out of paper on my note pad!

All EXCELLENT suggestions - all will be implemented (to some degree)!

This is why a middling painter like me LOVES this place!!! :D

PS Having room in a big house isn't the problem. Getting PERMISSION to expand display areas - Aye, there's the rub!! :rolf:

This one will go on one of the garage shelves with the other 1/35 and larger dino-models...

Moving forward on this one while I wait for delivery of various plastic rods and strips for the "Kong 2.0" ... anyway ...

... decided to close his mouth, so I trimmed his jaws with an box cutting tool, then puttied and texturized the openings ... I like it much better this way ... the other way it looked like he had an underbite ... more putty work on it tomorrow ... then the paint-up starts ...

Re: Dinosaur Bashes ... Running Thread ... UPDATE May 2023!!

#76 Post by bucketfoot-al »

Have not done any modeling since early March ... my mom passed in her 93rd year March 10, and then work got real busy, and my mind was ... elsewhere as you might imagine. :(

Anyhow ... Patagotitan is still waiting for the paint brush, but I decided to try my hand at something I had been too chicken to try for a number of years ... namely, sculpt "lips" (well, skin coverings would be more accurate) onto the mouth of a theropod dinosaur. I can't see the "lipless" theropods any more because I have concluded that this traditional restoration is almost certainly wrong.

Big meat eating theropods all MUST have had tooth coverings (much like the modern Komodo Dragon does today).

So I grabbed this 20" long Carcharodontosaurus model (a really nice toy is basically what it is) and got started. Here's the progress so far. The coverings are almost certainly not wide enough (and I may build up the flesh on the outside some more), but hey - its a start. I also plan to deepen the body (ie drop the stomach and torso lower by half an inch by building up another layer with putty). Then after repainting I might be happy with how this critter looks .... nice pose overall, though .... just needs some "tweaking"....

I completed the "lipping" of this Carcharodontosaurus today, then beefed up his torso to make it deeper (using a mixture of Quikplastic and Quikwood putty - the reason for the mix is that the Quikwood is softer and easier to mould. I've found that mixing it with Quikplastic creates the best and easiest mix for re-sculpting work on PVC or resin kits).

I rather like how it has turned out. Now to primer it and then decide on a paint scheme.
