Paint lifting with masking tape

#1 Post by overspray »

Does anyone know why this happens?

This is a resin kit and I washed it with a lye based degreaser (Super Clean) using a stiff bristle brush. The masking tape lifted the primer and in some spots lifted just the top coat of paint.

Have you thought of using
Silly Putty for masking?

What kind of primer?
What kind of paint?
What kind of masking tape?

Might want to consider hitting it with a sealer coat of something like dulcote to protect the surface before masking.

I stopped using masking tape when this happened one too many times.

I now use Silly Putty.

Some very good advice in the earlier replies. I also normally use Silly Putty since learning about it here at the Clubhouse many years ago. I recently, however, had a need for a perfectly straight line on a flat surface. I used Frog Tape Yellow (Delicate Surface). It worked very well with no seepage and no lifting. Of course, you still have to pull it off very gently. I don't think it would work well on a surface with much relief, since its stickiness is only slightly more than a Post-It note.

I generally let my paint dry and set for several days or longer to make sure it's hard before moving on to the next color. And I always seal (as Trevor suggested) between coats and colors. I remove my masking as soon as practical once the paint has flashed dry but before it has gotten fully dry and hard.
Best regards,
AZ

If I must use tape I stick it to my shirt and peel it off a few times before applying to the good surface. This cuts down on the tackiness.

In these situations, I flatten out the Silly Putty
and use a strait edge to cut the Putty into strips.
It takes a bit of getting used to with trial and error,
but works very well.

Thanks for the tip! I have a roller specifically for flattening Silly Putty, but I never thought about using a straight edge. I'll try it next time. :thumb2:

Another very good tip. I have been doing this for about 30 years. I learned about it in an auto body painting class many years ago. #-o
