What's on my workbench now.

#1 Post by tay666 »

I figure it's time to retire my old workbench thread.
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=113344
It was started 6 years ago, and has seen many kits come and go. And a few will find their way into this thread as they still aren't done.

I haven't worked on a kit since June. After the WF push I had to get stuff done around the house. Was hoping to get more of a jump start during my week off for Halloween, but my hectic life didn't cooperate with that plan.
I did finally get going though.

Image

Spent an hour tonight washing some resin so I can prime it all tomorrow.
I won't actually start all of it right away, but I want to get the priming done before cold weather sets in. That way I have plenty to paint during the winter and won't have to worry about stinking up the house (since I still don't have a spray booth yet)

In that pile of resin I have
Image

Image

And all these bases for the Graveyard Scenes line of kits.
Image

I have one more kit I want to prime, but I need to get some of the prep work done on it before I can prime it.

Image

Between these, and the stuff I already have in progress, I should have plenty to keep me busy through the winter.

You have some really nice stuff in that pile - looks like a great winter ahead!

I am hoping so.
I think I am going to have fun playing with my airbrush on a lot of this too.

Good amount to keep you busy over the winter for sure! Good idea priming all the Graveyard Scenes bases - I should do that and have them ready to paint too. Maybe I'd even get one or two done!

My thinking on that is this way I can keep them all fairly uniform color wise. The dirt and grass should all be pretty much the same colors and shades. Same for the stepping stones, though the head stones can have quite the variety.
Once I nail down the layout I want for my Monster Scenes I hope to do the same thing. Paint all the bases in one big cluster to keep them all consistent.

And I did actually get some modeling done today.
Lots of priming

Image

And some work with the dremel and glue

Image

Of course my hoodie now reeks of kicker from trying to get all those teeth to stay in place.
For some reason my 5-minute epoxy was taking forever to set up. So I had to tack the teeth in to let that set up.
Got pins in the parts for Kong so I can hold it while priming. And silly-puttied the connection points so when I do glue it together I can glue resin-to-resin for a better bond.

Thanks.

I finally got my 'On The Bench' page updated.

So everyone can see all the projects that are at some stage of completion.

More updates done to the site today. More priming, as well as base-coating, and highlight coating.
Really excited about this one.

I am taking full advantage of the warm weather and getting a lot of spray painting done.
But it was also really nice to hold that airbrush in my hand again.

It's been a couple months and I haven't posted anything.
Most of November was spent working on my display room
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=124784

December was the chaotic mess that is the holidays. Decorating, shopping, wrapping, and all that other stuff.

So, now I am finally getting into the swing of things. A few days last week I puttered around. Getting things set up. Drilled and pinned a few things. Did a little masking and airbrushing. Now I am doing some brush work on some of my Super Tiny Terrors. Getting back into the swing of actually putting paint on a kit again :)

Hopefully I will be posting some more pics this coming weekend.

Impressive work on multiple builds ... but doing that got me YEARS backed up on painting! :rolf: (Just cleared that backlog up last Fall so now I'm back to doing one project at a time) ... love the variety in your builds ... picked up a couple of building tips reading this thread - thanks - can't wait to see those Kaiju and Kong kits finished!

I find the opposite true for me. At least in the earlier stages of painting.
If I only have one kit to work on, and I don't feel like painting what needs painted next, I'll just put it off.
This way when I sit down to the bench I can grab whatever I feel like doing.

Which is why I am getting back into the swing of things with the Super Tiny Terrors I started last year.
I finished two of them and took them to WF, but that left 4 others. So I have Nosferatu, Kisszilla, Batzilla, and Robin Rodan to work on. So I have a ton of variety to work on. Skin tones, a couple of godzillas, superhero costumes, armor, face paint, a guitar.
Perfect for quick painting sessions. Half hour to an hour every night after work and before dinner. Painting whatever I feel like painting. Getting a feel for my brushes again. Remembering how the different paints flow and cover (or don't cover). Working on my brush control and just generally shaking off the rust.

Now, once I get close to finishing a kit, then I focus more on that so I can get it done.
But, there again, on the days I don't feel like tackling that, it's nice have something else to putter with.

Man, you must have some serious good eyes and steady hands to get such sharp lines and fine details on those pretty small kits !

Optivisor + reading glasses.
I'm still not as good as I want to be, but I am getting better. New brushes and better paint help a lot as well.

Also, a lot of going back and fixing my mistakes.

Not nearly as much bench time as I had hoped this weekend. :(
Bunch of shopping and crap on Saturday shot most of the day.
And the warmer weather today meant taking the dogs for a walk. But I still squeezed in a couple hours today.

Wasn't feeling the detail oriented vibe so today was playing with the airbrush for the most part.
Started with this.
Image

And ended with this.
Image

I know, not too exciting, but it's a start. I think the next step is going to be sponging on some color in that fur.
Then I can give it a wash to pop the texture. Still gathering reference pics to really get a feel for the colors I want.

I did do a little more work to batzilla's cape but no pics. It's still not done yet. Just getting the color a bit more consistent and tried a couple colors to use for shadows. Will wait until they dry to see which I like better.

Big plus - I found the missing arm for Nosferatu. The dog did get a hold of it, but he apparently dropped it on the other side of the basement. Only damage is some missing primer.

Glad to hear you found the missing arm.

I do the same thing when not feeling the detail vibe, and try to make some progress one way or another.

That's the reason I haven't started the teradrox yet. I need to do some puttying along the gums in the mouth, and just haven't been feeling the vibe yet.
But I'm gonna have to get started, because I also need to putty the arm connections on Kong before I really start painting him.
The joints are pretty good, but really will need some putty. So I am going to use the vaseline trick to do the putty, but still keep the parts separate for painting.

Also, now I am thinking, I should pull out my skull island mini bust from blackheart. While I have the colors out to paint the big guy, I might as well use them on the smaller kit too.
