Galileo Shuttle 2022 1:32 Scale

#1 Post by Trekkriffic »

This is my build of the new 1:32 scale Galileo shuttle kit by Polar Lights. I will also be building the separate interior kit with crew members.
I've been busily waiting over a year to start this build as the interior only recently began shipping
so I am really looking forward to getting started on it...

Enamel paint colors per Gary Kerr's recommendations. This is for the dark grey lower exterior hull. Flat Aggressor Grey, Flat Euro I Grey, and Light Tan. Light Tan will be my stand in for "Wood":

Image

Enamel paint colors mixes per Gary Kerr's recommendations.
This is for the medium gray upper exterior hull, Flat Light Sea Grey and Flat Light Grey.
Flat Light Grey will be my stand in for "Flat Gull Grey". They are close but I might add just a little flat green to get the color close to gull grey or
I might just increase the ratio of Light Sea Grey to Light Grey - maybe go 70% Light grey to 30% Light Sea Grey;
5% more sea grey than Kerr has in his recipe. Ought to be close:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 006 by Steve J, on Flickr

Polar Lights recommended color for the upper interior wall sections is Japanese Navy Gray
on the left but I think Duck Egg Blue on the right looks more like the wall color we saw in the "The Galileo Seven" TV episode.
The color looks to be more of a light greenish blue grey to me:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 007 by Steve J, on Flickr

Modelmaster Duck Egg Blue looks very close to the wall color when held up close to episode still shown on the box.
Maybe just need to add a little more flat green or even a little flat sea grey to get it just right:

Image

Anyway, I'll go ahead and mix some different formulations and brush them onto some scrap styrene to see how close
I can get to the colors seen in the "Galileo 7" episode which I am patterning my build after.

Scrubbed parts in warm soapy water with a soft scrub brush:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 010 by Steve J, on Flickr

Parts scrubbed and rinsed in another bucket or in the faucet spray:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 011 by Steve J, on Flickr

Parts laid on paper towels to dry:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 012 by Steve J, on Flickr

First group of the interior parts are laid on newspaper while the exterior Galileo shuttle parts are washed and drying on the toweling:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 013 by Steve J, on Flickr

Parts for the shuttle kit are laid out on the newspaper to finish drying:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 014 by Steve J, on Flickr

All parts for the interior and exterior together laid out and drying.
Only the clear parts are not washed:

Next I'll prime, that is, once the temp gets over 65 degrees or so with the garage door open. Been below 50 here today.
I think light grey primer would do well. Then I'll play with the bottle paints.

Arranging the boxes of parts on the carts adjacent to my drafting table/workbench:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 016 by Steve J, on Flickr

Nacelle winglet halves glued together and puttied with PPP.
This was something Mark Myers said in his build video should be done first before gluing to the hull; before trying to assemble the rest of the hull:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 017 by Steve J, on Flickr

All parts except for clear ones are primed with Krylon grey Colormaxx primer:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 018 by Steve J, on Flickr

I went to the local Sherwin Williams paint store and got chips of the colors Mark Myers said
Gary Kerr provided to him and which he used for reference on his own build. He provides the colors in his part 3 build video.
He did not keep track of the mix ratios though so the modeler will have to experiment until he has a mix close to the color samples.
To the left are the two exterior hull colors, to the right are the interior cabin colors.
You can enlarge the photo and read the SW # and name:

Image
Galileo Shuttle - WIP 019 by Steve J, on Flickr

Next up will be my attempts at color matching.

Needless to say, I am soooo glad I watched Mark's video. :thumb2:

So.... I decided to work on assembling the crew before mixing colors.

First I drilled a hole in the butt end of each figure and inserted a short length of Plastruct tubing:

Image[/url
The Galileo 7 - WIP 020
by Steve J, on Flickr

Then I cut a short piece of brass rod and inserted it into the tube. This will make it easier to hold the completed crewman when I go to paint it:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 021 by Steve J, on Flickr

After gluing all the body halves together I started on the first crewman, the very cute and attractive Yeoman Mears.
For Mears, I took the Uhura head and glued it to the torso; then and I gave her a pageboy hairstyle as seen in the episode.
I used AVES Apoxy Sculpt and several dental tools to sculpt her hair :

Once the AVES is good and dry I'll attach the arms and give her a coat of Mister Surfacer before final colors.
In the meantime I'll start working on Gaetano and Boma's heads.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks! Her hair has layers.
Quite a complex pageboy. I'm really happy with the forelock in the middle of her forehead...

So cute!

Moving along...

Yeoman Mears is brushed with Mister Surfacer 1000 after final tuneups.
Basically I shaved the sides of her head down with the edge of my exacto knife so she has a slightly more pyramidal look to her hairdo.
I also sanded and burnished away most of the texturing as it can better be done with paint:

Yeoman Mears drying on the dusty shelf of superheroes.
Funny... I didn't plan it that way but doesn't she appear to be sitting on the roof of the 1940 Batmobile?

Oh this is going to be fun !!!!!!

Always love your W.I.P. threads . . . I have a feeling I've missed out on a few of your posts over the last wee while - I'll be going hunting in a week or so when things FINALLY calm down for me a bit.

Good luck with this Steve (not that you'll need it with your skill-set!)

Thanks for the kind comments Spike. Appreciate it!

Onward and forward...

Finished sculpting Mister Boma's head. Should look good in paint:

Image

After painting his head I'll attach his arms.

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 034 by Steve J, on Flickr

Yeoman Mears got her arms. What mischief might she do now?

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 032 by Steve J, on Flickr

Yeoman Mears taking advantage of Mister Boma who has no arms to fend off her advances:

ImageThe Galileo 7 - WIP 035 by Steve J, on Flickr

Starting work on Guetano, I added a lot of hair which I will carve and sand to the final shorter hairstyle:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 036 by Steve J, on Flickr

Guetano got his head painted my version of flesh with black hair...

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 037 by Steve J, on Flickr

... and Mister Boma got his arms. Hmmmm... he he does not seem to mind Mears' attentions after all.

Mister Guetano got his head painted.I dotted the pupils with dark brown enamel using a sharpened toothpick:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 038 by Steve J, on Flickr

Funny, I keep thinking my Guetano looks a lot like David Janssen from The Fugitive...

Oh well... at least I got the hair right I think...

K - so a couple of thanks to your good self:
    • 1) Thanks for the update.
      2) Thanks for prompting me to JUST watch that episode again :)
I haven't watched that in a few years (the last time I went front-to-back on all episodes of all 3 series), and the only one I've watched in-between was "Arena" (my fave episode, along with "The Devil in the Dark" when I was a youngster).

Cleverly strung together, with only a few minor quibbles (the sprear throws etc.) . . . and loved the way Scotty remained loyal (chain of command) to Spock throughout.

Every time I've watched this I had that "I know that fella" feeling as regards the actor that played "Boma" (Don Marshall) . . . having looked him up, I now realise it was from the role he played in every episode of "Land of the Giants" #-o

I was also reminded (as if I need a reminder!) how stunningly beautiful Nichelle Nichols was, and that Yeoman Mears was a bit of a looker too! And damn was that officious Commissioner a PITA! - I'm amazed Kirk didn't punch him in the face

Absolute classic.

Guetano had very light greying of the hair at his temples.
I used a microbrush dipped in a mix of black and white enamel and dry brushed it onto his temples. then I thinned and blended it to appear more subtle:

Image[/url
The Galileo 7 - WIP 039
by Steve J, on Flickr

Guetano got some 5 light o'clock shadow and some grey hair at the temples.
With his ears, nose, and weak chin he comes off as sorta mousy. Maybe one reason I never liked this character:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 040 by Steve J, on Flickr

Dotting the pupils. The whites of the eyes are painted next followed by the iris. Then the upper and lower eyelids and the rest of the face in flesh. Then I'll paint the hair in a mix of Testors rust and tan enamel. Once the paint is dry I'll paint her eyebrows and lips. I may also add a light blush to her cheeks but very subtly. Last thing will be to add some darker streaks to her hair mixing black with rust:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 041 by Steve J, on Flickr

Face looks good. Just need to add eyebrows , lashes, and lipstick. Maybe a light blush to the cheeks but not too much:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 042 by Steve J, on Flickr

Yeoman Mears face almost done. She's looking to her left. With her bend left arm, I may try and do something with a tricorder and strap.
Have her left hand having just pulled the strap over her head to rest it on her left shoulder. Might look pretty cool:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 043 by Steve J, on Flickr

Next I'll paint Boma's head and finish puttying the other crewmembers before painting their heads.
I may hold off on painting the arms, legs, and torsos though until I have more of the Galileo together interior.

I can't believe how much detail you can put into something so small.

I think the hardest detail may be painting the eyebrows on these litttle guys. I have to shave down the end of a toothpick and dot every individual “hair”.

The secret is in the details...
Thank god i have a magnifier headband or I could never do some of these tiny things.
Anyway, I am just about done painting the heads. After that the boots and clothing should be a breeze!

Boma head painted:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 044 by Steve J, on Flickr

Not sure why but I seemed to have added 20 years to the actor's actual age with my re-sculpt of the Galileo Interior kit's Kirk head.
Also, I layed on the enamel for his hair real thick then dotted at it with a fine microbrush leaving it to dry with a little lumpy texture like real hair.
He does have a sort of annoyed smirk though much like the emotions the character's face showed.

McCoy head painted:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 046 by Steve J, on Flickr

He is looking to his right. Maybe a little concerned about something.
Kudos to Round2, their kit's McCoy head really does look like McCoy, a great sculpt.

Spock and Guetano heads painted:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 045 by Steve J, on Flickr

The secret to Spock was the upward curl at the tips of his eyebrows.
I aadded a little yellow and olive to the mix for his skin tone.
I also added brown and dark blue to the black enamel for the hair.
Guetano looks sorta... :-k … mousy?
Much like the character in the episode IMO.

Scotty and Latimer heads in progress:

Image
The Galileo 7 - WIP 047 by Steve J, on Flickr

Eyes are almost done; just need their iris's dotted.
Then need eyebrows, lips, and hair painted.

Thanks for your comments!

Those are looking great - and for the scale - are very recognisable . . . wonderful customisation and paint!

Did Polar Lights decide it was better for sales to include the main characters instead of the actual crew? - or was that because it's not supposed to be tied to the "Galileo 7" episode?

Thanks for the compliment!

My understanding is Round 2 wanted a set scaled to fit both the Galileo and the retooled TOS bridge kit so they went with the bridge crew because they were more recognizable. Also, the new Galileo kit does not refer to the Galileo 7 episode per se leaving modellers free to build it as they please as far as the crew is concerned.
Offhand, I can think of three TOS episodes featuring the Galileo with crew.
