Been rasslin' with this monster a bit tonight ... finally got the pins and holes to line up ... tomorrow to matte-seal the bottom part, then Gorilla-Glue the top to the bottom (I added horizontal drill holes to the inside of each large opening the glue goes into ... so that it goes out to the inside when it starts bubbling instead of through the seams ... finger crossed .... then will putty up the seam from the inside and add a few wires (holes drilled on the insides already), then more putty ... man I am ready to FINISH this MoFo once and for all ... I'm getting a bit tired of it frankly! :(

*PRO TIP*

Here's a technique I found useful to safeguard big fragile items when it comes time to paint/drill them:

I place them on a large spare pillow. I hit on this system 4 years ago when it came time to paint up my gigantic "Big Hairy Guy" Toho Kong (produced by John Tucky). In that case I laid the pillow on my lap while sitting down and lay Kong on top of it while I painted.

When it came time to drill holes and insert pins in the already completed top half of the Empire State Tower, I just laid the pillow on a worktable and made sure it couldn't slide before drilling/inserting pins. :D

I can absolutely relate to your “getting a bit tired of it” statement.

Large complex bashes take a lot of work and time, and can often feel tedious.

You are making great progress, so push through as the end is in sight, and you will be very happy with the end result no doubt !

Thanks fr the encouragement - needed it yesterday - was a bit tired and juggling too many things - but I managed to grind about 40 minutes of this 'bashing grunt work with the drill in there somewhere ...

Nice tip on the pillow. I have an old towel I use for setting things down on so I don't damage them.

You're welcome tay666! Glad you found it helpful!

(As an aside - the pillow is especially GREAT when you are handling a heavy object that needs cushioning - and as cushioning protection for your legs)

Update: Current Status:

Gorilla Glue cured (and the side drain holes worked like a charm to keep the bubbling glue from busting the exterior seams). Additional wires inserted into interior holes, now getting ready to putty them and the seam from the inside.

PS This whole thing is now really, REALLY heavy. :shocked2:

Mid-morning Update: Puttying done. (This thing is reminding me of a fallen log :jester: )

Next the paint touch up.

But first I have to do some work work $$$ so I can afford my hobby. :mrgreen2:

Be prepared for updates to come fast and furious this weekend. :mrgreen2:

I had to repaint the bottom half yesterday after connecting the two .... the bottom was a bit too dark ... so this morning, I had to re-spray the bottom with matte sealant ... without clouding the porthole windows or light panels ... a little Saran Wrap took care of protecting the top half ...

Image

Next up - preparing the new light panels ... an Exacto-knife (well, box-cutter in this case) is used to scrape the excess paint from all 4 edges of each panel ... see how THICK the paint is on the reverse side?

Image

Then to insert/glue the panels .. each one gets a smidgeon of Loctite "Power Flex" glue gel at the very top and very bottom of each frame (not on the paint!!!) ... experience helps ... not a single frame was too tight or had to be "re-cut" on the spot (unlike last time) ... all panels slipped into the frames perfectly .... next to extend the ladder ... then to set up a new "photo shoot" (this model 'bash is just like Giselle Bunchen .... coming back for a photo shoot after time off and a "make over" :rolf: ) ... say, that gives me an idea ...
