I am going to try and do a black color scheme on a werewolf kitbash
I was hoping some of you king kong builders/painters could advise me on how to best do black fur ?
Do you mix in grays, blues , purples or other colors with the black base color?
What color do you use for dry brushing the highlights; brown, blue, grey, others?
Any advice and tips would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Question for you Kong painters
Full disclosure - I don't think I have ever done a black fur paint job yet.
But, if I did, I would probably prime black. Heavy drybrush a med-dark gray.
Then decide exactly which color I wanted to use to color him. Be it gray, brown, blue, etc.
Then pick a dark shade of it to go over that drybrushing. Then darken that up even more and go into the the shadowy areas.
Take a step back and figure out where to go from there.

I am trying something a bit different, but if it doesn’t work, I will fall back on your helpful approach.

I always do it differently. But I dont just do black. I think putting in subtle hints of colors like purple, blue, even orange is a good idea. If you look closely at an animal with black fur, like a horse or even a gorilla, there is a lot of color there actually. I would study photos of black animals and try a broad color scheme to make it look more real, when people first look at it their eye will see it as black but it will be much more! Good luck!

Highlighting black paint for fur....I usually go for dark blue highlights, but also can go for dark brown highlights. If it is a werewolf.....use some night colors...purple>>>go bold on your highlights!
