Threw on some primer just to see the base all tied together . Flipped the shelf around to see how a non straight edge will look on the front .
Bottom will be filled with water effects .
Still lots of detailing to do on the base .

Adding some stalagmites and stalactites to the base
Working on the edges of the top shelf
I realize pics of the base work are not as cool as creature pics, but I have been trying to put more thought and effort into my bases.

Thanks to all who have been following this bash!
Comments and improvement suggestions are always welcome.

I'm just catching up with this bash and I need to go back and read all the detail. But I think this is one of your best barad_dur.

This creature strikes me as very cohesive with the two main elements melding together really well stylistically. I know painting is not often your favorite bit but I like your efforts here very much.

Your riffing on the Medusa serpent-half are inspired, very well executed and a lot of fun! Thanks so much for sharing them.

.

Very impressed with the idea for the base.

You always ask for suggestions/thoughts - so feel free to totally ignore what follows . . .

Not sure what the "final idea" is going to look like (let's be honest - YOU probably don't know either :P ) . . . but wonder if the uniformity (that's not the right word but can't think of another) would be better broken up by adding collapsed boulders in one of the quadrants - joining the "table top" to the water area.

I'm just concerned (without knowing exactly what your intent is) that it might look too much like the top of a wedding cake :-k

Thanks Ian !

I totally understand and agree with your concern.
I am going to try to make 2 small waterfalls (one in front, one off the back) coming off the top platform and I am hoping that will provide the necessary connectivity?
If not, your collapsed boulder idea is great, or I may add a small wall on the back to connect the top and bottom.

Thank you the helpful feedback!

Got rid of the large front stalagmite. Maybe it’s the time of year, but it just looked to me like a big rock Christmas tree.

Started painting the base, roughed in base colors.

My current plan is to have the bottom basin filled with a greenish water effect.
However, I like the color of the stone so much that I may paint all the bottom basin with same natural stone color and have clear water.
This will require me to add details to the bottom of the basin as now I just left it alone because green water will hide it.
I guess I should try stone color and clear water option first and if I do not like it, I can easily change water to green.

I have not fully attached top shelf as I still have the “cake topper” looks concern that Ian so artfully described.
So my backup plan is to just use either the top shelf or the bottom part separately by itself for the base.

Decisions decisions…

That's looking absolutely fantastic Joe! Now go have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. 🎄🤠🥰

Typed from my beach chair at Rockport Beach Texas, where its 76° and the water is 66°. Sitting here in my swimming trunks with a nice cold drink in the shade of an umbrella, thinking of all of you up in the Frozen North. 😁🤠🤣

Added more details to the base.
Working on painting the base.
I am going to see how clear water effect looks first.
Plan B will be greenish water.

Now this is really looking fantastic! I wasn't sure where this base was going til you painted it just today - now, I can SEE it! :drool2:

You know what crossed my mind just now? How about putting a monster deep sea fish like a Scorpion Fish or some kind of crab poking its nose (or claws) - or BOTH - from the underneath the cave area of the base ... because (being a lifelong snorkeler) I can tell you that is exactly what you see in the sea when you look into nooks and crevices and holes and caves ... just some "food for thought" to spice up the overall effect and give some sense of scale to your fantasy creature ...

The base is looking a treat. I like the two-tiers and the notion of clear water. Vlad's idea of a small sea creature/s lurking in this water for scale/ambience sounds worth considering. That said this bash/build doesn't need any more to be very arresting.

Of your creature-creations that I have seen I think this one is my favorite.

Thanks B-A and Squidy for the positive feedback and suggestions!

Rest assured, no worries, I already know exactly what I am going to have in the water in the bottom basin…I think it will be perfect…

I am hoping to get this bash completed before the end of next week. 🤞

I have to make the bottom basin edges taller to hold the extra water required for the lurking creature that I plan to add.
Working on building up the edges.
