So MANY air holes

#1 Post by mjbare »

I'm working on the IDC Rocket Man resin kit. So many air holes and the mold was old so there's a lot of unwanted textures? that I want to get rid of. Been trying to get as many fixed with Aves but wonder if there's any other way like a really good auto primer that would get rid of most of it. What's everyone's favorite spot filling primer?

Depends on size holes.. You have use bondo with gloves first..

How big are the air holes?

If they're pinholes then I would recommend modeling paste. It brushes on and smooths out with a little water. I usually use my fingers, but I will also use a damp brush to smooth it out and fill multiple holes at once.

If the holes are larger than roughly 1mm-2mm then I'd stick with Aves.

I've recently been playing with some self-leveling primers/thinners for very fine pin holes and printing lines. The jury is still out, but it seems to make a difference. I used a lacquer product from Ak Interactive, but I've read good things about Mr Hobby self leveling primer, but I haven't tested it yet.

Of course, this is the final step after filling and sanding, to get the last of them.

I have used Dupli Color filler primer:

https://www.duplicolor.com/product/filler-primer/

My local automotive supply store sells it.

Also, if you can find it, Mister Surfacer in a bottle:

https://www.amazon.com/Surfacer-1000-Ma ... d_source=1

It comes in three thicknesses and is pricey. Also available in a spray can.

Both are lacquer based.

If you prefer a water based filler for easy clean up I recommend Perfect Plastic Putty:

Just don’t wet sand it or PPP will just wash off. So always apply primer over it.

I'm adding another vote for modeling paste. Good luck.

What brand(s) of modeling paste do you use?

Liquitex.

You can find it on Amazon and plenty of other places.
I'd avoid a primer that's also a filler. You'll likely soften details that you may want to keep sharp.

I use the Liquitex also. Pretty sure Michael's and Hobby Lobby carry it as well.

I was near a local store, Art Supply Warehouse yesterday and picked up a small can of the Liquitex model paste. Going to start using it today. I'll let you know. Thanks
