Stripping kits

#1 Post by tay666 »

I know this has come up numerous times.
But I think I have found an awesome site about this.
http://www.bonediggers.com/1-3/strip/strip.html

It compairs various products, explains how to use them, and what the results are.
Both the advantages and the drawbacks.

I have a cheap sandblaster that uses regular sand.
set low it takes of the junk that others leave.

its my last resort .

I have used it on some old stuff that was caked with paint and it left the styrene unharmed just a little pitted if i hit it too long.

but on a rat fink you never notice it.

Speaking of kit stripping - can anyone recommend a good way to strip off chrome?
I purchased a PL Robby the Robot kit at Chiller, thinking it was not the chrome version (which I already have). Turns out it was the chrome version #-o (honest mistake on the dealer's part).
Since at this point, I don't think returning the kit is an option, can someone recommend a good way to strip off the chrome from one of the kits?
Thanks,
GIDave60

From the article in the link in the first post
I first purchased CSC for stripping clear-coated chrome from plastic wheels. When my trusty Formula 409 first failed to de-chrome an entire set of wheels, I was forced to look somewhere else. Easy Off worked well but I had some trouble getting the base coat, to which the chrome attaches to, to release from the plastic. Super Clean was new, and touted as a super tough cleaner so it got a shot. It stripped the wheels bare in under 15 minutes. It was the first of many pleasant surprises.

I've tried using something called Bleche Wite, a corrosive sprayable used to clean tires. It stripped off 40-50 year old Testors RED enamel within a couple of hours. However it's been at least a day and a half and it hasn't put much of a dent into black or blue enamel. It's working, but very slowly. I need to try soemthing else I think.

Dark colors are always the hardest.
A lot of times they seem to actually stain the plastic.

Thanks for this thread. I just used the Easy-Off method on a 1965 Aurora Superboy. Sprayed, let soak for 30 minutes. Toothbrushed scrubbed and rinsed. With gloves. Did that 3 times. Then dremeled down the horrible tube glue at the seams. Ended with holes all over every seam. Squadron putty. Sanding. Primer. Came back wonderfully. I've never restored a kit so badly assembled and painted. It's been hours, but it's well on the way to looking presentable.
Also did/doing a MIB Comic Scenes reissue at the same time, so it's been a fun week.
Pics by the end of the week. Having too much of a blast now to screw it up with computer pic uploading...LOL.

OK Guys - Update on the Castrol Super Degreaser.

The swag arrived a few weeks ago from the US (mego postage but worth it as I will explain) and after a bit of monkeying around with the (badly) built up AMT Man From Uncle car to strip it to bits, in it went to a bath of the Castrol solution for a 24 hour soak.

To say that it GOBBLED the paint off the kit is an under statement. There was no need for using a toothbrush or other abrasive, it just fell off!!!

Out of the bath and under running warm water for a couple of minutes and the bits were ready to paint and rebuild. As smooth as if they came out of the AMT box as new (I have an unbuilt one as well). If anyone wants pics, then PM me.

All I can say is this stuff really is the dog's bollocks for stripping. But beware - it is nasty stuff and needs to be treated with respect. But the results are awesome!!!

Now what will I strip next.....?

well if you're int eh Uk and looking to strip resin kits, then i suggest Mr Muscle oven cleaner...make sure you have some rubber gloves on as that stuff messes with your skin.

simply spray the stuff on and wait 30 minutes or so and most if not all acrylic paint will be removed without damaging any filler or putty that you have used on the kit.

that's my tuppence worth....hope it helps

One word of advice.
Go ahead and use an old toothbrush, or scrub brush when rinsing the parts back off.
Even if all the paint is gone, it is a good idea to get in all the tiny places to make sure all the paint romover is gone as well.

Yep, this is really important. I had a vinyl kit i stripped and apparently didn't get all the CSC out of the insides before I put it back together. 'bout a week after I got it painted the paint started bleeding/coming off near one of the seams. :ooops:

I have used the Castrol Super Clean on two things now and had excellent result although both were resin. I bought a Bowen Toxic Avenger of the bay and it needed alot of stripping... After about 2 days of soaking.

I also snagged a Bowen Spiderman/Venom Bookends set on the bay. Normally I wouldn't have stripped an original Bowen pre-paint but the two figures were damaged and needed to be resulpted. I figured I should just strip them and paint them my way. The factory paint job on Venom was horrible. I dropped them in the stripper an within 20 minutes the paint was coming off like skin peels. I had them stripped, washed and repaired all in a nights work, next day they were primed and are currently waiting for my paint job.
