Paleocraft/Alchemy Works Smilodon OOB review

#1 Post by graf orlok »

I needed some sabertooth cat references and decided to get Sean Cooper's Smilodon from Alchemy.

Ordered it online and it was very simple and straight forward. Very smooth. Got a fair shipping quote automatically even though I wanted it shipped to Sweden. Four days later it arrived here, extremely fast compared to my previous experiences.

The kit came in three pieces, body and two teeth, and a wooden plaque to put it on. Crisp white casting with just minor seems to clean up.

My first experience with Alchemy but definitely not my last.
Very satisfied customer!

Man that looks really cool. I wana get one of those. Do you have the website?
You might want to look into stuff from the movie 10000 BC, heard is not a great movie but they do have some really good looking cats in there

Thanks man, http://www.thealchemyworks.com is their website. Sculptors website is http://www.paleocraft.com and he also carries a few goodies.

I actually liked 10 000 bc. As a pop corn flic, that is. Not much substance in it, but it's a fun ride!

But I do think the Sabertooth was one of the few effects in the film that didn't work well enough. Mammoths where awesome, set extensions flawless... But the Sabertooth in broad daylight looked like a rug... filmed on a different location :P

I have a few of Paleocraft's cats but not that one. I
had wished with was a little more "action" to him.
Looking forward to see what you do with it Staffan. :D

Yeah, it's a pretty static pose. Which in fact contradicts his wide open jaw... But it's a fantastic study, and for reference this pose is gold. Actually I like his Xenosmilus much better. Fantastic action and very dynamic.

...but it's not a Smilodon. :D

No problems with the pose and gape for me, lions do this when gently showing who´s boss.
Coop´s work is always impressive and so is Staffan´s, so I´m looking forward to seeing this one finished, too.

Sean Cooper does great work.

I think he's improved alot since he did that Smilodon, when compared to the killer realistic detail work he did recently on his new Mammoth sculpt.

He's really doing nice work and keeps getting better.

Cooper's Smilodon is checking pheromones with the flehmen grimace.

Cooper is currently working on a larger Smilodon:

Hopefully it will become available.
