An inexpensive base possibility. Free actually!
Everyone but me probably knows this already. I walked through the flooring section in Home Depot and noticed they have FREE samples. Looked like at least 50 different types. They are 3X5 inch finished hardwoods and laminates. The edges need to be trimmed and covered in some manner, but there may be a real potential for use as a base. I took one to the check out with my purchase and it was free. Just don't take 30 to the checkout or the next time they'll probably have a price sticker.

Cut off the tongue and glue it into the groove and at least save a little work.

Great idea!. If I remember correctly Home Depot also gives sample of tile too. Again don't take a big armful.

I went to HD the other day by me and all samples are now $1. Not expensive, but someone told on us.
