Is There a Jerseyfest 2024 Planned???

#1 Post by GIDave60 »

Subject says it all, am I missing something? Even the Web site seems down! I thought by this time last year there was at least information that the show was going to be held.

I've seen postings on Facebook that there will not be a show in 2024. I don't know of any details, so maybe one of the show organizers can confirm this.

Aw man, that is a bummer! I had such a good time last year, I took Saul Alvarez's outstanding airbrush class and was looking forward to taking another class this year! Was hoping after COVID it would be back to being an annual thing. Oh well, there's always '25.

Didn't the state of New Jersey institute some oppressive vendor tax scheme that took away most of the incentive for vendors go to shows because it cost them too much money to do so? Was that a part of it? 🤔

If that were the case wouldn't Chiller have been equally affected?

I think this was simply a case of no one wanting to take on the heavy responsibility of organizing it, which is a shame because the years I went it was a fantastic event.

I know some people - myself included - didn't like the fact the dates were pushed to later in Sept. when people were back at work and it coincided with hurricane season...

I suspect you're right Derek. I imagine that organizing big events like these is a real hassle, for all the obvious logistical and legal reasons.

The tax story that I seem to remember had something to do with vendors having to get a certain type of NJ State permit, which may have discouraged a lot of small vendors, who previously wouldn't have gotten such a permit.

I almost want to say that I remember reading about this on the Jersey Fest website a few years ago, in the form of a warning to any would be vendors that state inspectors would be there and looking for the permits. If a vendor didn't have one, they'd get fined some amount.

You can see how that could negatively impact model shows, where many so-called vendors who registered would simply be Hobby modelers like you or I looking to sell off some of their stash.

As an example, that's exactly what Bill aka Monster Jones did at an IPMS event I attended with him down here a few years ago. If he had had to buy some State permit for a couple of hundred bucks, it would have defeated the entire purpose of trying to sell a few of his models there. 🤔

What you described is what I KNOW to be in effect for the Chiller show. I never encountered that at Jerseyfest. In fact your tax id was your social Security number; from the paperwork I filled out. Pretty easy for anyone that had one to remember that number. It was never required to be on your person.

I sure do wish this show makes a comeback but I haven't heard a peep
