Kitbash:Dino-Dragon 2; updated 2023-10-22

#1 Post by barad_dur »

2023-10-22; new pics page 2; filling in neck area, slimmed down tail some more
2023-10-21; new pics page 2; started attaching the head and neck to the body
2023-10-20; new pics page 1; blending tail into body , slimmed down neck, started adding horns
2023-10-19; new pics page 1; slimming down under torso
2023-10-17; new pics page 1; changing angle of tail; raising and extending neck
2023-10-16; new pics page 1; started thinning down tail and underside

I plan to create an another dragon bash using CM studios 4 foot long dino-dragon kit.

I had bought 2 of these dino dragon kits over 15 years ago, but never opened the second dragon box until just recently.

I was quite surprised to find out that the second dino dragon kit differs significantly from the first one.

The head, main torso, and wings of both kits are the same but:
- first kit neck is fairly straight, but the second kit neck has a huge curved to it
- first kit tail is fairy straight and horizontal to the body, the second kit tail has a huge curves and drops downward from the torso
- the arms and legs of second kit are very different from the first.

This is actually a good thing as I wanted to do something very different with this second kit anyway.

I have Posted some pics below to show the differences.
Note - pics of first version are a non-modified build up. I hope no one minds that I used this pic found on the internet.
I used this un-bashed pic instead of my bashed version to better highlight the differences.

FIRST VERSION (fairly straight neck and tail, and funky stance)

HERE IS MY BASH OF THE FIRST VERSION (removed front legs, modified back legs, sculpted new head, totally reworked wings)

Very nice. Looks like Charlie was reading your mind when he made that second one for you.

Hah BA, crazy I know, right !

I think I am going to plan on hanging this guy from the ceiling as not sure I can make a base tall enough to account for how long and low the tail hangs (unless I drastically rework the tail, which I would rather not).

It will have to be a very vertical flying pose, much like theirs Vermithrax bash

I MUCH prefer the curved neck on this new one . . . just has more "attitude" about it.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

Well, I am not sure exactly where I am going with this bash.
But I went ahead and started making some changes that I think will be needed regardless of if end design is flying or standing or …

I cut the tail off as the current design just takes up too much real estate with that huge curve at the end.
So changing the angle of the tail at the base to go immediately towards the right.
And the bottom half of tail can wrap around to the left and not take up so much space as before.

I will also need to slim down the neck as I did with the tail.

BEFORE (tail went straight back from body)
Image

NOW (cut off tail and will angle it towards the right side of the body)
Image

I plan to make neck longer to give it a more dragon-ish look.
I also will also raise the neck and head up, but still keep it curved.

NEW NECK (cut off part of neck from front of body and reshaped it and repositioned it to both raise and extend the neck)
Image

NEW NECK AND BODY
I have a lot of work to do to fill in the underpart of neck from body to the head.

Working on slimming down and making the torso a bit more athletic.
Cut out current rounded abs armor.
I plan to build up the chest area , and have the abs armor much flatter than before.
Roughly attached the tail at a new angle. Lots of blending and refining to do where it joins the torso.

Continued blending tail into body
End of tail still comes to far out in front of the body and takes up too much real estate to easily display
So, I will either have to put a sharper harder curve in the tail and bring the end back in much closer to the body,
or
Take the big curve out and make the tail extend almost straight back from the body

Looking real good - I know that you will strive to make this one real different from the last one - can't wait to see how you take this one to "the next level".

The first one, as I recall, was a real pain in the derriere to keep re-bashing - hopefully that experience will allow you to shorten the time needed for this bash. :alcoholic: (I don't actually drink except an occasional Ožujsko pivo over Summer vacation - but I have come to be fond of that emoji!)

Thanks BA for following this bash, and for your positive and motivating feedback!

But I am not so sure about being a quicker bash as I am still not sure what I want to do with this dragon?

Maybe try a true dragon 4 legs and wings deign, instead of just 2 back legs and wings wyvern design that I usually use?
Should I have a basic horizontal standing look , or some kind of semi-vertical rearing up on back legs look ?

So, given all this indecision, this will likely be another trial and error rework, rework, and more rework project.
But that’s ok as I will eventually get it where I can live with it..eventually …

I am making progress though.
I started beefing up and detailing the head horns, and I sharpened up the back of neck spikes

That dragon head now looks great! I know how many iterations you put the other head through, which is why I say that I think this looks absolutely perfect. I would chalk it up as a win, and go to work on the rest of the body. That head is absolutely out of the park gorgeous!
