Netflix streaming question

#1 Post by Dinsdale »

This is a question for those of you who watch a lot of internet streaming video:

Lately I've noticed a real slowdown in my internet speeds, and videos that I watch on my computer or through my Roku box take forever to load and watch, with tons of pauses for buffering.

The one exception to this is Netflix. Why does Netflix load quickly and play well most of the time while other sites and services are so slow?

Thanks,

Paul

It could be an overload with their servers.

Netflix has their content hosted on many different servers around the country, so most likely you are getting movies from a server nearby. Having all those servers also helps spread the huge load out so they don't become as bogged down.

Other sites may be on servers on the other side of the country (or world) and have to go through a lot of routers and connections that could be slowing them down. Also, a lot of websites have code to connect to advertising and user tracking services. If any of those services are responding slowly, the page you are visiting will load slow as well.
